So we…

watched the match yesterday without calling st.fallen.

Oops, did I just say that out loud? Sorry PB, no pani for you from fallen for a week.

So anyway, at this super not-secret meetup yesterday(sans fallen), we decided that you lot were just not intelligent enough to understand the last post. I pity thee, ingrates. Only comrade Wackinnaborgeouseworsoski seems to have the required mental dexterity to read it. I mean, just look at it. It should be in the bible. NOT as the noise a demon makes as it is exorcised or anything, but as the answer to all life, and why I never seem to have anything to write about.

In other news, some jobless hack went and pointed everyone to tinychat.com/kottu and now there are at least two or three people in there all the time. I presume the original creator was trying to kill twitter or something, but since it’s flash based, and doesn’t work on phones, epic fail.

Everyone’s in a slump. There are few posts and there are fewer comments. It’s almost as if they’re all out actually getting a life.

“some jobless hack went and pointed everyone to tinychat.com/kottu” – sorta like your ‘automated’ twitter updates no? πŸ˜› πŸ˜‰

hmmm you pointed out the obvious. The blogosphere’s increasingly becoming silent and the ones who are active seem to have lost their zest. Give or take a few. A few weeks back logging onto kottu or going thru ur own blog, getting past comment approvals etc could keep you occupied for hours. Now, 15-20 mins tops!

Kottu needs a makeover. Thats for sure. Perhaps Indi should run it professionally than a solo one man show to promote his bloody two cents we are old tired of. Kottu can be useful if run professionally. Need some Glucose and Suensu tonic.

What exactly do you mean, ‘professionally’? Dedicate a paid team of developers to it? That’s not very viable is it?

OK “Professionally” means having an organized set up. Dude let’s face it. This janitor is too busy trying to build mansions to some 260,000 IDP’s in Vanni. So guy has absolutely no time even if he would love to dedicate some time. His lack of interest reflects on Kottu as well. What i mean is, like in other countries this blogsphere too can be run by a GROUP of likeminded individuals some of whom will be jobless enough to devote some time.

Besides, a blogsphere is a community. As such NO one single individual can OWN a community. Can he? Kottu as of today is a PRIVATE property run by an individual who himself admits he is not a saint. Hence the need for greater participation of others that will lead to transparency, better governance, cyber democracy and so on.

And YES, it is viable to PAY and have a dedicated team as well. Members will pay if they are given a good deal. Perhaps, Indi should look at forming a Trustee board or something like that. Yes, this means Indi losing control over his baby and thats where the problem is. I can tell you, Power is addictive !

Achcharu on the other hand is gaining more importance if you have noticed. Its only a matter of time before people abandoned kottu unless Indi does something about it. Its now or never. Hope he realizes this and does justice in the greater interest of all bloggers.

    Am i making sense buddy?

Indi isn’t a saint, and Kottu isn’t perfect… but it’s the best we’ve got, and most people are satisfied with the way things work… I guess he could add more features like rankings and featured blogs and stuff, but as you said he’s got much more important stuff to do…

and this board of trustees you talk about, who are you going to fill it up with? jobless trolls who’ve got all the time in the world? Do you think any other blogger besides Indi will step up to the plate? I really don’t…

    • June 19, 2009 at 9:21 am

I’m not sure what you think kottu is, but it certainly isn’t as you describe it. As chavie says, it isn’t perfect, but it isn’t some private experiment of Indi either. He does not own it as such. It wouldn’t exist without all the posters, and all the posters just need a place to show all the other posters what they’ve written. Kottu just manages to do that, although, again, many more features can be added.

If you can find a bunch of people willing to maintain a more advanced version of kottu, one which hopefully does not crash as often, please forward them to Indi himself, I’m sure he’s more than willing to share the effort. There is no ‘power’ in maintaining an aggregator.

Achcharu died a long time ago, and it’s still pretty dormant from what I see. True, kottu is a bit dead too, but it usually comes out of these slumps.

and “Achcharu on the other hand is gaining more importance”??? what in the world gave you that idea? as Jerry mentioned, noone even goes there anymore!

and as for your comments about Kottu being Indi’s baby, I’m pretty sure that his intentions are always to make it better, and he wouldn’t mind losing control if in the end Kottu ended up a better service. He has proven his selflessness countless times and I don’t think we’ll see an exception over Kottu, that is if a viable alternative is put on the table…

remember: Kottu does not carry ads, and is a free service. foe each new blogger listed on it, Indi has to expand the server RAM and that costs money… So whomever takes over needs to foot the bill, because Kottu over the next few years will see more and more bloggers and readers…

how abt NB the great as Chairman of trustee board u r suggesting?
but agreed one thing, Indi started when he was JOBLESS, now he has got a life in Vanni, so kottu isn’t a darling anymore !

    • June 19, 2009 at 11:02 am

I wouldn’t trust that retard with doling out tickets at the MC restrooms.

Kottu is useful, and personally, I’m thankful he made it, whether he was jobless or not is of no real importance is it? Plenty of good ideas are born that way. You seem to have some grudge against Indi for some reason, go talk it out with him.

Guys, joke apart, i do feel kottu stinks thesedays whether u like it or not !
That said, here are my suggestions.
1- Form a kottu trustee committe / board/ council whatever u wanna call it. It should be a group of people ideally representing both sex and ofcourse scattered globally.
2- Allow Ads. There is no harm in it. World’s biggest Free online search engine Google SURVIVES and RUNS on Ad revenue. As such kottu has no reason to avoid Ads if it can gerenerate revenue to finance expansion of kottu.
3- Have a full time paid moderator. This way we can also give employment to a sad soul out there amongst us.
4- Kottu council should meet, chat and have online conferences on a regular basis to review performance which again should be measured against set targets. Therefore the need to have set of defined objectives? What does kottu want to do end of the day? That still remains unanswered. Answer this 1st. Set objectives, acheive them.
5- Kick Indi out of Kottu. Let him be just another member. This is the real test of his credibility if as u say he is not selfish. He should have the maturity to let go in the greater interest of all bloggers, but the question is, Will he? If so, i will reveal my anonymous identity πŸ˜›
6- Revamp the site. It sucks from its dead white design lay out to features, its pretty amateurish. You can’t have a montessori drawing kind of layout when u claim to be the biggest blog aggrator in SL. Thats pretty basic and should make sense.
7- Stop Ass kissing. Shed your Ego. Look at the bigger picture everyone. Together we prosper, divided we fall. There is a lot of hate, animosity and ill speach on kottu. This needs to be addressed. This doesn’t mean deleting bloggers off kottu. They should be given enough notice and time to correct themselves before a final call is taken. I don’t think this happened with NB, Padashow, SN, tamil net etc who were trouble makers, yet could have been reformed if handled gently. I’m sure this back fired on the said individuals and also kottu. Both lost.
8- Upgrade the infrastructure. Free servers and dream host are not the best in town. NB claimed to have hacked it once taking advantage of this basic set up. There is greater need for security or least spam prevention. Some blogs listed are just spammers. How did that pass through if the infrastructure was capable of identifying it? So you need better infrastructre to withstand attacks and associated risks.
9- Achcharu is gaining prominence. Check carefully. Go through the stats guys. See the improvement as compared to kottu. Competition is good coz we stand to gain by it in terms of better service.
10- Kottu does have a foundation. So build on it. Don’t let it fall.

    Thank you

You’re starting to sound like a very mentally handicapped person we all know…

      But still,

1 – You want them to be of each race too? πŸ˜› And pray tell, what would these good people do?
      2 – Ask indi.
3 – A full time moderator? You’re saying there should be censoring of the content? Quite contradictory isn’t tat?
      4 – to be a blog aggregator. This isn’t a corporation.
5 – So you’ll reveal who N- erm. Never mind, none of us asked you to reveal yourself. Literally or otherwise. It’s indi’s site. We use it. He has no power over what’s posted on blogs, just approves relevant blogs for listing.
6 – The design works. It’s simple and easy to comprehend. Yes, features can be added, and I’m sure everyone would thank you if you could code something up and send it off to the admin.
7 – Nah, we were glad NB was kicked out. Most of the others are still very much on kottu. As for ass kissing, you’re just employing your BS generator again aren’t you? “Shed your ego”?
8 – what exactly are these fr servers and dream host? Surely Dreamhost has not started giving out free host space? Also, the key word being NB ‘Claimed’ to have done that. Yo- He claims lots of things.
9 – Link? Te only stats I see are referrals from achcharu, and they’ve been at around 1 a month for a while now.
      10 – wtf?

Dear ASV/idiot/whoever else – You seem to not have a grasp of exactly what kottu is. Please come back when you actually know what you’re talking about.

Explain kottu to Idiot then πŸ™‚ I have a different take on this matter altogether and i really don’t think kottu is doing a great job. Lets end here coz i don’t see the point in our discussion. Thank you for the patient hearing though. Lets agree to disagree and say bye. God bless.

Kottu is an aggregator, that’s what Indi promises in the ‘about’ page and that’s what it delivers… nothing more, nothing less… If you want a good social network, try out Facebook.com, it’s all the rage I hear!

And as for your board of trustees thing, I find it difficult to implement and impractical… Yes, a fair debate on the future of Kottu should be encouraged, but a committee doing all the deciding? nothing will ever get done, it’s going to just be bickering from 8 to 5…

Indi can earn more than he spends for the servers by putting ads on Kottu, but he doesn’t… that maintains a certain quality about the site… Even Google won the search engine wars (beating Yahoo and MSN) by keeping it’s homepage clean and simple… Google has looked the same way since the early 2000s!

If you want a better aggregator than Kottu, I suggest you invest some of your hard earned bucks in a server and a webdesigner (since you don’t seem like a very technical guy)… after all, that’s how Indi started Kottu, isn’t it?

    • June 19, 2009 at 4:46 pm

Thanks for that, chavie, I’m sure our friend here has at least some idea what kottu is now.

Btw, what an aggregator does is display a number of different feeds from different blogs all in one place.

If you want a better aggregator, like chavie said, take the initiative and make one. Or just stick to something like technorati.
