The Muslim Dude Thing

You live in Sri Lanka don’t you? No? Well then, greetings to you, foreign devil. Let me tell you a story. A tragic story of a young man who was left to fend for himself for a month. This gent was just told that he would be left to his own devices for yet another month or so. This news has driven that resourceful yet lazy being to near insanity and, among other things, occasionally referring to himself in the third person.

Yeah, it’s a short story. Now for the rest of the Sri Lanka related post.

Apart from my imminent death, to be caused by liberal application of ingredients to my “cooking”, something else I’ve been meaning to jot down is the impression that most Muslim males in Colombo are sleazy. I don’t have much first hand experience of this, but a lot of people I know seem to think Muslims are a bunch of ravenous sex-starved predators just waiting to pounce on the next bit of metaphorical steak that comes their way.

Now I know at least one of you fits the description of a Muslim male, and I’m okay with the surely slight chance that you’re going to get offended. What with the whole of the western world seeing you through suicide-vest tinted glasses, a gaggle of gossipy twenty-somethings are the least of our worries right now. As they say, don’t shoot the messenger. Or the blogger.

In a survey conducted recently which involved me trying to recall the number of people who supported this theory, it was found that even a lot of Muslim females think that out of the males who approach them, the ones who happen to be Muslim are usually ranked higher in the great big sleaze-o-meter in the sky. Other findings included the surprise that some of the Muslim females I know get hit on.

Why is this? I simply find it hard to fathom that anyone would get past the facade of of a vicious velociraptor with a taste for Sri Lankan Male and actually make advances at them. Perhaps less significantly, where is this impression of Muslim men being sleazy coming from? Is there any truth to it? How can one quantify such a thing? What relation does your religion have to do with how sleazy you are? Am I going to get flamed for this post? Is Halik really all that sleazy?

All these questions and more, might be answered in the comments section below. I hope.

Which muslim boy hit on you? πŸ˜€

Got to thinking about this after one of your feminist meetings? πŸ˜›
I don’t have any quantifiable evidence, but yeah, the stereotype holds. Though it is only a stereotype so there will always be exceptions.

Really? If there’s any false stereotype about muslim men, it’s that all of them are good looking. (though I must say, a vast majority of them are!) (except ol’ azeez)

And just because Halik never called you back after the first date… πŸ˜›

I dunno if it’s just Muslim men, but I find South Asian men in general sit pretty high on the sleaze-o-meter. No idea why.

More seriously I have friends who are otherwise liberal in their views who dislike/distrust muslims. It makes me feel very uncomfortable and I’ve never been able to fathom why.

    suicide-vest tinted glasses.. lol..!

this does seem to be a common occurence, as is T’s statement about them being good looking (don’t listen to her, she’s a sucker for ’em..), so how do the two go together? can a muslim male be sleazy in a good looking way?

doesn’t matter, either way i predict that u will meet a swift and possibly fiery end after this post has gone up for a few days. nice knowing u!

Personally i don’t think trust, sleaze, looks or anything else can be attributed to a broad label like ‘Muslim’. To do that is just narrow minded (well maybe except for the good looking part :D)

I must confess I have had someone tell me a completely different story. And this was told by a top divorce lawyer. Well according to him lot of married local Sinhalese ladies end up having affairs with Muslim men because they last longer in the sack! And the reason for this being the little cut which they have to do to make them Muslim. Whilst this opinion is hilarious this guy is a well informed source. I personally think most South Asian Males are lecherous and sex starved and lacking in basic sex education!

These are the kind of things you can get lynched in America for πŸ˜€

I am all for being sensitive about others but they do take political correctness too far in some spheres.

Personally I think the problem is all about culture than being ‘Muslim.’

I grew up in Maldives, a country of 100% muslims but the guys weren’t creepy. I think it was because they had a pretty free society where the guys and girls were allowed to mix and date from a young age.

I guess where those kinds of natural impulses are repressed, all sorts of gross stuff tends to come out. You can see that in this country to a certain extent. On a sleaze-o-meter, I would rank:

    1- Muslim guys
    2 – Tamil Guys
and then only if at all the Sinhalese guys.

Tamil guys have this problem too. They hit on girls, flirt with girls, and very often I notice, have very little respect for girls who respond to their overtures, though they cynically make use of the girls for a while. They’ve got cultural hang ups to deal with! Culture is all about making you civilized but in some of these guys it has had the opposite effect.
